One place where I learn most
yet others think I learn least.
I go to the ice rink to learn
hockey is my school.
Classwork is much more difficult
you write with blood and sweat.
There are no letter grades here
Only success and failure.
The Coach is not your teacher,
he does much more than that.
Work hard not because you must
but because you want to.
Fall down and helping you up,
are only the hands of determination.
No mandatory RISE here,
only self-motivation to rise again.
A better group of classmates,
you could never ask for.
All work is teamwork,
brothers until the very end.
Valedictorian is a rotating title,
given to the hardest working.
Not always the most talented,
but the one that sacrifices most.
The semester report card
is the weekend stat sheet.
Either your number is all over it,
or parents are all over you.
You dread the final bell,
it could mean victory or defeat.
But no matter the outcome,
you can't wait until tomorrow.
Wow, Ryan, hockey must be really important to you. Your post was much more serious than mine, and it seems as if you learn the most about yourself and the world when you sort of leave it to play in the rink. Deep stuff here and Good Job
ReplyDeleteYou captured a lot of feeling in this poem, and I definitely liked the use of contrast as well as comparison in your relation of hockey to school. My favorite stanza was the one that begins "Valedictorian is a rotating title, given to the hardest working," because you were able to take a concept from school and apply it in a new way to hockey.
